What Happens if You Drink Honey Water on an Empty Stomach?

Honey is often used to enhance the taste of hot and cold beverages, but it is also used to increase their nutritional value.

Since you already drink water to stay hydrated regularly, you could also add some honey!

Why should you add a tablespoon of honey in your glass of water?

There are few good reasons. Read below to learn about the health benefits and how to prepare honey water:

honey water on empty stomach

1. It helps your body get rid of toxins
Honey mixed with lukewarm water can help your body effectively discard toxins through urine and faeces. You can improve this feature by adding a bit of lemon juice as well.

The most common and efficient way to use honey in a detoxifying drink is to make a mixture of one tablespoon of honey in a glass full of lukewarm water and drink it 30 minutes before meals.

2. Honey is a powerful antioxidant
Organic honey is a very powerful antioxidant which helps the body fight the release of free radicals. It is also full of minerals, proteins, free amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and polyphenols that protect the body from germs.

This “syrup” also has anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular, antiproliferative and antimicrobial benefits.

3. Helps in the treatment of ulcers
Honey possesses a number of curative powers and has been shown, in particular, to be an effective ulcer treatment for two reasons. First, glucose oxidase, an enzyme in honey, produces hydrogen peroxide, which kills harmful bacteria that can contribute to the development of ulcers. Then there are other floral antibacterial substances in honey, which come from flowers when bees collect pollen, that add to honey’s effectiveness in eliminating bacteria.

Certain varieties of honey, however, can be more effective than others at healing ulcers. We have reports from Saudi Arabia, where local honey was used to cure ulcers, and from doctors in Egypt and Russia, who have had positive results using their local honeys.

The key to successful ulcer treatment appears to hinge on it being natural, unprocessed honey. Two tablespoons a day should be about right for most types of honey. When the problem has eased, 1 tablespoon daily will probably be enough

4. Honey can help you overcome allergies
A recent research shows that patients with seasonal allergies, who daily consume the pollen in honey, have a significantly better control of their symptoms than those who use only conventional drugs.

Patients taking birch pollen had a 60% reduction in symptoms, double the amount of asymptomatic days, 70% fewer days with severe symptoms and a 50% reduction in the use of antihistamines.

5. Increases energy
Honey is a great source of carbohydrates and a natural energy booster. It is composed of a unique carbohydrate composition of natural sugars and trace amounts of antioxidants, enzymes, minerals, vitamins and amino acids, making it a smart, natural energy-filled afternoon snack. In fact, for years, sports dietitians have recommended that athletes include pure honey into their pre-exercise meal or snack for that very reason.

6. Honey promotes better sleep
During the night, your brain uses a lot of energy. One efficient form of brain energy comes from sugar stored in your liver, called liver glycogen. Your brain taps your liver glycogen before hitting your muscle glycogen (stored sugar in your muscles), so having a little extra sugar before bed can help your brain function better at night. Raw honey is preferentially used to stock liver glycogen, so it is used first for brain function.

How to prepare Honey Water:
It’s quite simple. All you need to do is mix one tablespoon of raw honey with a glass of lukewarm water.

How to consume:
For all of the health benefits explained above, the best time to consume honey water is to drink it in the morning on an empty stomach or before you go to bed. If you want to use it as a detoxifying drink, you should consume honey water (with a bit of lemon juice) 30 minutes before every meal.
