Women’s Health: How to Naturally Reduce Period Problems

Once a girl reaches puberty, menstruation becomes a part of her usual life. Depending on the person, menstruation can last anywhere from three days to a week.

Menstruation is the body shedding the lining of the uterus. The blood from the uterus goes through a small opening in the cervix and leaves the body through the vagina.

This occurs monthly unless a woman is pregnant or has some type of condition. A regular menstrual cycle is a sign that the woman’s productive system is working right but this is not in every case.

During menstruation, however, women have to deal with pain, discomfort and inconvenience that come along with it. But, with just a few simple lifestyle changes and home remedies, you can reduce these common period problems.

Note: If you have heavier bleeding than usual, or periods lasting longer than what is normal for you, you should see your doctor. These can sometimes be symptoms of health problems that require medical care.

1. Heat Packs

Placing a heat pack on the stomach will help the fluid leave the uterus and soothe the body. This will also help eliminate any cramping as it will relax the muscles in the uterus.

  • Put hot water into a heat pad or a water bottle, place this on your stomach for about 5 to 10 minutes. Stop for a few minutes and place it on the stomach again.
  • Another way you can do this is by drenching a towel with warm water, wring out any extra water and place it on the stomach, wait until the towel cools down and repeat if necessary.

Note: Make sure the water isn’t too hot as this can cause skin damage to your stomach.

2. Hot Showers or Baths

Taking hot showers or baths can help to some extent to deal with the discomforts that come along with menstruation.

When you take a hot shower or bath, your body temperature rises. This encourages dilation and increases the flow of blood to your uterus. It even relaxes your abdominal muscles and eases your pain.

Before taking a bath, you can add Epsom salt or a few drops of an essential oil of your choice to the bath water.

Take hot showers or baths 2 or 3 times a day during your period.

3. Abdominal Massage

When you softly massage your stomach, it will help decrease the pain that is caused by your monthly flow. Massaging will help cramps and bloating.

  • This can be done while laying, sitting and even standing.
  • Put a few drops of olive oil onto your hands or fingers and rub your stomach with this.
  • Softly use circular motions using both hands, massage this area for about 10 minutes
  • Do this daily to prevent pain during your period.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is another popular option that can cut down the discomforts of your period. This tonic helps flush toxins out of your body and reduces heavy bleeding. It can even help treat symptoms like cramping and irritability.

  • Add 2 teaspoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to a glass of water.
  • Drink it 3 times a day during your period.

5. Blackstrap Molasses

Blackstrap molasses is a great way to consume nutrients like vitamin B, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and selenium.

Iron will help produce red blood cells that you lose during menstruation. It will relax the muscles and prevent cramps.

  • Mix in 1 to 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses with a cup of warm milk.

6. Foods Rich in Vitamin C

Healthy eating throughout the month is important. However, incorporating more foods rich in vitamin C in your diet during your period can help ease menstrual complications.

Vitamin C helps reduce the amount of progesterone in the uterus, allowing the lining of the uterus to break down faster. This, in turn, will facilitate the removal of toxins without any pain.

Plus, vitamin C helps your body absorb iron and helps strengthen the blood vessels.

  • Include foods rich in vitamin C, such as bell peppers, dark leafy greens, kiwi, broccoli, berries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, peas, and papayas, in your diet.
  • You can also take a supplement, but only after consulting your doctor.

Along with vitamin C, eat foods rich in carotenoids and foods that are natural blood thinners.

7. Fluids

Make sure to drink enough fluids during your period as it is very important to stay hydrated during menstruation.

Having high amounts of fluid in the body will allow the fluids to leave the body faster and smoother. This is also great for cramps and bloating.

  • Drink about 8 to 10 cups of water a day. If you are currently working out make sure to consume more.
  • Green tea, fresh fruit and vegetables, and coconut water are great ways to consume fluids as well.
  • Try to avoid caffeine and alcohol during this time as it will just make your cramps worse.

8. Exercise

Women should exercise daily and continue even during their periods. It has been found that women who are physically fit tend to experience relatively painless periods.

On the other hand, overweight women and women who are not physically fit tend to experience heavier periods.

Exercise increases blood circulation in the body to help reduce menstrual cramps and other discomforts. It also helps reduce stress and mood swings.

Light exercises like swimming, walking and jogging are good choices. If needed, you can lessen the intensity and the duration of your exercises.

9. Turmeric

Turmeric is a great way to make menstruation days like any other days. It will raise the body temperature, which will boost the flow process and shorten your periods.

Turmeric is an antispasmodic, which will help soothe cramps and pain.

  • Add one teaspoon of turmeric powder into one glass of warm water

  • Having intercourse during menstruation will speed up your periods. The orgasmic contractions increase the flow. However, remember that you can still get pregnant from intercourse during your period.
  • Don’t pick up any heavy things during menstruation
