Pay Attention To The Codes On Stickers Of Fruit And Veggies. Here’s What They Mean.

Everyone has seen the labels on fruits and vegetables they buy in the markets. But do you know what they actually mean?

By reading the PLU code, you can tell if the fruit was organically grown, genetically modified, or produced with chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or herbicides. Read on.

To be more specific, if the code contains 4 digits that start with number 3 or 4, it means that the product was grown conventionally or “traditionally” with the use of pesticides. The last four digits of the PLU code simply tell the kind of vegetable or fruit. For example, bananas are labeled with the code 4011

If the PLU code contains 5 digits, and the number starts with 9, it tells you that the produce was grown organically without the use of any pesticides, only manure. An example of an organic banana would be: 94011

Moreover, if the PLU code contains 5 digits, and the number starts with 8, it tells you that the produce is genetically modified (GMO). GMO fruits and vegetables trump being organic, meaning that it is impossible to have an organic produce that is grown from genetically modified seeds. An example of a genetically engineered (GE or GMO) banana would be: 84011

We truly believe that after reading this you will pay attention to what you buy in the markets.

Don’t forget to share this with your friends and family, as you might help someone in need. Cheers!
