Homemade Cinnamon Mouthwash That Will Help You Keep Your Breath Fresh!
Bad breath, or also known as halitosis if it’s chronic, is a common problem that can be triggered by anything from an over-load of bacteria in your mouth, dental problems, or simply a stinky snack with foods like onions or garlic.
A mouthwash can temporarily solve the problem, but have you ever wondered why is it bright purple or electric green anyways? If you take a closer look at the label, you will see that you’re not getting anything more than a mouthful of chemicals, artificial coloring, and flavoring that does very little to help your breath for more than half an hour or so. In fact, conventional mouthwash may actually do more damage in the long run since the main ingredient in mouthwash is ethyl alcohol, which can weaken the lining of your gums. Although their research was inconclusive, scientists at Stanford University have linked certain mouthwash to oral cancer.[the_ad id=”4150″]So the next time you need to freshen your breath, try this natural homemade mouth rinse. It’s low-cost, refreshing, and incredibly effective.
You will need: cinnamon powder, honey, lemon juice, baking soda (optional).
Why these ingredients?
Cinnamon: Unlike mint, which only masks the smell of bad breath, cinnamon actually gets rid of the odor by killing off odor-causing bacteria. According to a study conducted by the International Association for Dental Research, people who chewed cinnamon gum had a 50% decrease in oral bacteria versus people who chewed mint.
Honey: Besides making everything taste better, honey also has antibacterial properties. If possible, try to get Manuka honey.
Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand by bees that pollinate the Manuka bush, and is one of the most unique and beneficial forms of honey in the world. It contains 127 times the amount of methylglyoxal, which is the antimicrobial that kills off bacteria, than acacia honey (the regular type of honey you usually see). Always try to buy organic raw Manuka honey.
Lemon Juice: Lemons have a strong refreshing scent that helps with nasty cases of bad breath.
Baking Soda: Baking soda helps get rid of nasty things (like bad bacteria) and has been shown to help whiten teeth.
You will need:
1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon
1/2 to 1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 ½ teaspoons of honey
1 cup of warm water
A jar or bottle with a tight-fitting lid.
Put the cinnamon, lemon juice, baking soda (optional), and honey into a bottle or jar with a tight-fitting lid. Pour 1 cup of very warm water (not too hot) into the jar and stir well in order to melt the honey and mix the ingredients. When you need to freshen up your breath, shake the jar/bottle a bit and swish/gargle 1-2 tablespoons for 1 minute.
