Tihar, or also known as Swanti, is a Nepalese festival of lights that celebrates the triumph of good over evil. The festival lasts for five days, and each day celebrates a different animal.

The first day of the festival is called Kaag Tihar, and it is dedicated to crows and ravens as their cawing represents grief and sadness. On this day, devotees offer food to these birds in order to avert grief and death in their homes. The third day is called Gai Tihar, and is dedicated to cows because they signify wealth and prosperity. The forth and fifth day, Ghobardhan Puja and Mha Puja, are dedicated to oxen, and for sisters to thank their brothers for the protection they provide.

But the second day, which is called Kukur Tihar, is dedicated solely to dogs. According to local belief, dogs are the messengers of Yamaraj, the god of death. Yamaraj’s two four-eyed dogs, Shyam and Sadal, are said to guard the entrance to hell. On this day, dogs are worshiped to appease Yamaraj, and also for being faithful and loyal companions. People shower their furry friends – including the ones who live in shelters – with good food and garlands, and they also apply a dash of vermilion paste to the dogs’ foreheads as a sign of holiness and blessing.

This year the festival is scheduled to start on October 27th and finish on October 31st.

See how these cute dogs celebrate the day! It’s pretty much the most adorable festival ever!
