In 2013, Bhutan officially announced its plan to become the world’s first 100% organic nation, but now Denmark’s newly announced plan is gradually taking the lead.

According to OrganicVeganEarth, Denmark is already the most developed country in the world when it comes to the amount of organic produce it exports. In fact, the Danish national organic brand will soon celebrate its 25th year in business – making it one of the oldest organic brands in the world!

Thanks to organic exports since 2007, the Danish economy has been boosted by 200%. Since the trend to opt for organic, pesticide-free foods continues to increase, the Danish government made the choice to accumulate 53 million Euros in 2015 to transform their country into an organic one.

Now, it’s only a matter of time before the country achieves its ultimate goal. The government plans to achieve this by working on two different fronts.

As explained in the 57-point document published by Økologiplan Danmark, the first goal is to double the agricultural land cultivated with organic methods by 2020. This is going to be achieved by cultivating the government’s land belongings using organic and biodynamic methods, while independent, small-scale farmers will also receive the finances and support to transform their own crops to be 100% organic, including livestock. Funds will also be allotted to developing new technologies and ideas capable of promoting growth.

The second part of the plan involves promoting the country’s transition to organic. All institutions in Denmark will be included to promote pesticide-free, biodynamically-grown crops and produce. The first target is to ensure that 60% of the food served to the public is organic. Schools and hospitals are especially expected to respect the nation’s initiative.

Let’s hope that Denmark will succeed and set an example for the rest of the world to follow! What do you think?
